  • BJP govt to repeal pending Sports Bill

  • The BJP government is all set to repeal the contentious Himachal Pradesh Sports (Registration, Recognition and Regulation of Associations) Bill, 2015, which has been pending with the successive Governors since it was passed by the Assembly on April 11, 2015.

  • The Cabinet is likely to take a decision to repeal the pending Sports Bill at a meeting scheduled for April 2. The BJP, while in opposition, had accused the Congress-led Virbhadra Government of bringing in the Sports Bill to rein in the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) headed by its Hamirpur MP Anurag Thakur. With the change of government in the state, it was being expected that the Jai Ram Thakur government would repeal the Bill.

  • On April 11, 2015, the Himachal Assembly had passed the Sports Bill and sent it to Governor Kalyan Singh, who was holding additional charge of Himachal, for his assent. Then Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh had personally met Kalyan to impress upon him the need to give consent to the Bill. Governor Acharya Devvrat assumed office on August 12, 2015, but the decision on the Sports Bill is pending with him.

  • The HPCA too had approached Acharya Devvrat expressing apprehension that the Sports Bill was intended to clip their wings and ensure government interference in the cricket body. The Congress government had countered the allegation by claiming that the Bill was in line with the recommendations given by the Lodha Committee on sports bodies.
