  • Himachal gears up to eradicate TB by 2023

  • Himachal Pradesh aims to eradicate Tuberculosis (TB) before 2023 while the Government of India plans to do so by 2025. A new scheme, Mukhya Mantri Kshay Rog Nivarna Yojna (MMKRNY) has been launched to achieve the target, which will make the hill state the first TB-free state in the country. Around 14,000 TB patients are diagnosed and treated in government health institutions in the hill state.

  • State government officials said in 2017, 15,000 new TB patients were diagnosed and put on treatment in government health institutions against a target of 14,070. Against a target of 2,500, nearly 900 new TB patients were notified from the private sector. Nearly 550 TB deaths are reported in Himachal Pradesh each year.

  • If TB patients are diagnosed by quality-assured laboratories and treated under DOTS by a health care system involving all sectors, this new form of TB can be checked.

ð  Revised National Tuberculosis Control Programme (RNTCP) has been implemented in Himachal Pradesh in a phased manner. Hamirpur is one of the first pilot districts in India to take up the activity in 1995, followed by Kangra and Mandi in 1998.
