Technical advisory panel sits on Rs 7K cr Renuka Dam project

The multi-crore Renuka Dam Multi-purpose Project has been inordinately delayed in the absence of the Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) approval. The project will address water woes of Delhi and other basin states.

An agreement for the project was signed in Delhi among six states, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Delhi, Rajasthan and Uttarakhand, in January this year but since then, little progress was made in the project.

The total cost of the 40 MW project was revised to Rs 6,946.99 crore on February 20 though it was Rs 4,596.76 crore in March 2015. The local area development fund (LADF), which has been estimated at Rs 104.205 crore, has also been added to the project cost, making it a Rs 7,051.195 crore project.

The Renuka project has been conceived as a storage project on the Giri (a tributary of the Yamuna) in Sirmaur. It envisages the construction of 148 metre-high rock-filled dam for the supply of 23 cumec water to Delhi and other states.

The project will also generate 40 MW power during the peak flow. It will be executed by Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation Ltd (HPPCL). The total submergence area of the project is about 1,508 hectares.
